4DS Memory Limited (4DS), a technology company specialising in non-volatile memory, has announced the shipment of its Fourth Platform Lot to development partner imec. The lot incorporates 4DS' memory with imec's megabit memory platform, allowing the integration of transistors and memory cells on the same wafer.

Scheduled to arrive at imec's facility in Belgium in early July 2023, the Fourth Platform Lot will undergo extensive testing and analysis to evaluate the performance and reliability of 4DS' memory. This shipment marks the final lot of the current phase of collaboration between 4DS and imec, which was extended for another year in November 2022.

The collaboration aims to demonstrate the scalability and manufacturability of 4DS' memory for high-density storage applications, including solid-state drives (SSDs) for cloud computing and artificial intelligence. By addressing the demand for faster, more affordable, and energy-efficient data storage solutions, 4DS is confident in the potential of its memory technology.

The successful testing and evaluation of the Fourth Platform Lot could pave the way for advancements in next-generation memory development, offering promising possibilities for the future of data storage.

There’s this idea floating around that throwing enough cash at Intel will suddenly turn them into the next TSMC. But semiconductor manufacturing isn’t something you can rush, it’s a complex, slow-moving process that takes years of precision and experience.

Intel could recover some ground eventually, but framing them as the savior of American chipmaking feels more like a political talking point than a practical reality.
