Dad still claims me on his taxes - I’m 21 - Hi guys! The other day I (21F) was talking about money with my coworker and we were talking about the stimulus checks that were given out during Covid. I mentioned that I never got any of the stimulus checks because my dad still claims me on his taxes. She was shocked and said that was ridiculous and I’d need to change that right away.
For context: I still live at home bc I am a student and can’t afford to move out yet even with a full time job. I do not pay for any insurance, but I pay for everything else. Additionally, I’m saving up for a car and once I can buy one it’s going to be in my name and I’ll be paying the insurance for it.
I asked my dad to explain why he still claims me on his taxes (bc I don’t know anything about taxes and I was curious) and he got defensive and said: are you 25? To which I replied no. Then he said: that’s why. Not much of an explanation
Also, my dad still claims my older sister who is 24. She lives on her own, has a full time job, pays for her phone, and has a car in her name that she pays entirely for.
Can someone explain the basics of tax claims to me and if it’s good that my dad still claims me and my sister or if it’s bad. Thanks!Personal Finance
