Downer Wins $4.6 Billion Contract to Supply Queensland with New Passenger Trains for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics
Downer, a leading provider of integrated services in Australia and New Zealand, has secured a monumental $4.6 billion contract to deliver 65 new passenger trains to Queensland. This contract is part of the state's investment in public transport ahead of the highly anticipated 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The trains will be manufactured in Maryborough, creating 690 new jobs.
This agreement between Downer and Queensland brings with it a range of benefits:
Revitalizing Local Train Manufacturing - The contract marks a revival of train manufacturing in Queensland, which had previously been outsourced to overseas suppliers. By producing the trains locally, the region will witness the return of valuable skills, training, and innovation to the industry, fostering regional development.
Enhancing Passenger Experience - The new trains will greatly improve accessibility and comfort for passengers, particularly those with disabilities. Advanced features such as Train Boarding Bridges, Electronic Levelling Controls, phone charging capabilities, Wi-Fi access, and CCTV cameras

will be implemented to address platform-to-train gaps and enhance passenger convenience.
Boosting Network Capacity and Reliability - With the introduction of the new trains, the network's capacity and reliability will be significantly enhanced. The older fleet will be replaced, and the number of six-car trains in service will increase. Furthermore, these new trains will seamlessly integrate with the existing network infrastructure and signalling systems.
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability - The new trains will contribute to environmental sustainability by being more energy efficient, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the trains will prioritize the use of locally sourced materials and incorporate recycled components wherever possible, aligning with Downer's dedication to sustainable practices.
Preparation for Future Growth and Demand - As the population grows, urbanization continues, and major events like the 2032 Brisbane Olympics approach, the new trains will help meet the expected increase in public transport usage. This forward-thinking investment ensures adequate infrastructure is in place to accommodate future demand and facilitate smooth transportation during major events.
The Downer-Queensland partnership not only represents a significant milestone in public transportation but also boosts the local economy, delivers improved services to passengers, supports sustainability efforts, and prepares Queensland for the exciting future ahead.

Intel could recover some ground eventually, but framing them as the savior of American chipmaking feels more like a political talking point than a practical reality.
