Altech – Silumina Project DFS Expands Output by 8-Fold to Meet Long-Term Silicon Anode Demands and Address China Graphite Export Restrictions

The world is craving faster, more efficient, and longer-lasting electronic devices. As a result, research and development efforts are focused on the battery industry, improving battery life while preserving the environmental impact. Altech Batteries Limited (ASX: ATC and FRA: A3Y) is one such company that is focusing its efforts on the lucrative world of battery manufacturing.

Altech has recently announced its expansion of the Silumina Project DFS output by eight-fold, from 15 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 120 GWh. This significant expansion has been made keeping the long-term demands for silicon-type anodes within the industry in mind. Altech has managed this expansion without having to make any changes to the plant or equipment used.

Silumina AnodesTM Project DFS

The proposed production of Silumina AnodesTM product originally comprised 1,000 tpa of high-purity alumina-coated metallurgical silicon, incorporated into 9,000 tpa of similarly coated graphite (10% mix), producing 10,000 tons per annum (tpa) of product.

Altech has made a strategic decision to focus on the production of alumina-coated metallurgical silicon only, providing an 8,000 tpa output of this product. The graphite will now be imported and incorporated by the customers within their battery plants. As a result, the output has expanded by an impressive eightfold rise from 15 GWh to 120 GWh.

Benefits of Coated Silicon

Alumina-coated silicon is the active component needed to produce batteries with higher energy density and longer life. By incorporating Altech-coated silicon into battery products, there is a potential reduction of graphite usage for potential customers and, consequently, environmental impact. Moreover, blending coated silicon (10%) with uncoated graphite source leads to an increase of battery energy density by at least 30%.

Impact on China Graphite Export Restrictions

China's graphite export restrictions have caused a serious concern for potential battery manufacturers. However, Altech's research has demonstrated that the cost-to-reward ratio for graphite is relatively minimal. As a result, potential customers can utilize their existing qualified graphite source while incorporating Altech-coated silicon into their battery products.

Conclusion

Altech's expansion of the Silumina Project DFS output was bound to generate a positive outcome for the company. As the world goes electronic, battery manufacturing will become one of the most crucial and lucrative industries. Altech's decision to expand the output by eightfold and focus on alumina-coated metallurgical silicon only is commendable in meeting the long-term demands for silicon-type anodes within the industry.
