Altech Advances on CERENERGY® Battery Prototypes: A Leap Towards Grid Storage Solutions

Altech Batteries Limited is making significant strides in the development of its ABS60 60kWh CERENERGY® battery prototypes, designed for the grid storage market. In collaboration with Fraunhofer IKTS, the project has reached critical milestones, including the procurement of materials, halfway completion of ceramic tube manufacturing, and substantial progress in cell assembly.

With low defect rates and the delivery of two battery casings for heat loss testing, Altech is on track to finalize the prototypes by mid-2024, marking a crucial step towards commercializing this innovative sodium chloride solid-state battery technology.

Progress on Prototypes

Altech and its joint venture partner, Fraunhofer IKTS, have successfully redesigned the pilot plant in Hermsdorf, Germany, to support the production of the 60kWh battery prototypes. The project has advanced significantly, with all necessary materials sourced and half of the ceramic tubes required for the battery cells manufactured. The assembly of the cells is also well underway, with more than half completed and exhibiting promising results in performance testing.

Technical Specifications and Innovations

The 60kWh battery packs, each comprising 240 CERENERGY® cells, are engineered to meet the IP65 standard, ensuring they are dust and weatherproof.

The batteries' dimensions are optimized for grid storage applications, with a height of 2. 6 meters, length of 0. 4 meters, and width of 1. 0 meter. This redesign showcases Altech's commitment to delivering high-quality, durable battery solutions for the energy sector.

Quality Assurance and Testing: Advanced Quality Control Measures

Altech employs state-of-the-art quality assurance techniques, including micro computed tomography (μCT) scanning, to inspect the alignment and composition of each prototype cell. This meticulous approach ensures the highest standards of quality and performance, with the initial charge and discharge tests of the cells meeting expected outcomes.

Heat Loss Testing and Battery Casing

The battery casings, produced by König Metall GmbH and undergoing heat loss testing at Fraunhofer IKTS Dresden, are crucial for evaluating the prototypes' efficiency. Special software has been developed to monitor the battery packs during testing, further underscoring Altech's innovative approach to battery technology.

Collaborative Efforts and Customer Engagement

Upon completion, Altech plans to showcase the ABS60 prototypes to select potential customers, demonstrating the practical applications of CERENERGY® batteries across various industries. This initiative aims to secure offtake agreements and reinforce Altech's position as a leading provider of grid storage solutions.
