Someone transferred more than $64k from my mom's checking account to a stock company. What exactly should we do? - Hi, this morning my mom was checking her Bank of America app to see if she received a deposit she was expecting but she saw that there was a transaction from yesterday that totaled more than $64k to a stock company called "TD AMERITRADE DES". She has never heard of this company nor knows anything about stocks/investing, so this was definitely not her. Also, this is an incredible amount of money and is more than half of her total savings. She immediately called customer service and spoke to someone in Spanish (English is not her first language) who told her they would freeze her checking account (not savings) and they will investigate the fraud. She also told her that there was nothing she should be doing but since this is basically my mom's life savings, I think it would be crazy not to. My mom asked her why she didn't receive any alert for this transaction since it's a huge amount and the rep had the audacity to tell her "You have the app on your phone? You can check your transactions yourself". This all just happened and my mom is an absolute mess right now and I want to do everything I can to help make sure she gets her money back asap. What exactly should we do next?
EDIT: Wanted to add that she did in fact set up alerts and her other accounts (savings, credit, and debit) still have their alerts on. It was just the checking that seems to have alerts disabled which she didn’t realize until today.
Also, should we file a police report?
EDIT 2: Thank you to everyone who offered advice! I called back BofA to make sure we had the investigation/case #, then called TD Ameritrade to tell them about the situation. Unfortunately, like some of you predicted, they weren't able to confirm anything with me because of security reasons, which I understand. However, they did search if there was any account with my mom's name and zip code or SSN and they told me there wasn't. This was what I was expecting anyway, since on the transaction there is a name there and she doesn't have any association with TD.
Since they couldn't really say if there was/wasn't an account with the information I gave them, I don't know if it's flagged for fraud or anything like that. I stressed to them that I wanted them to prevent that account from being able to do any more damage, so hopefully they understand.
We also did file a police report, changed her passwords to everything, made sure she had 2FA, transferred her money to another account, canceled her cards, documented everything ourselves and we should be getting complete documentation of everything happening from her bank in the mail. A lot of people mentioned filing a complaint with CFPB but I'm not sure if we should do that now or if a few days go by without any action or notification.
Other than that, I think we've done most of the things people suggested we do in this situation and like some said, we now need to wait and let the bank handle/investigate it.
